Summer Medical Student Research

Each summer two to five medical students from the Summer Medical Student Research Program work in our laboratories. Most of the students are sponsored by the Walter E. Macpherson Society. The students participate in a rigorous one-week orientation and then focus for the next seven weeks on specific projects. Under supervision of the laboratory personnel, the students work as independent investigators. With several projects ongoing in the laboratory, there is ample opportunity to learn a variety of techniques and participate in projects with other student colleagues. Students are expected to present the results of their work at local and national meetings both as oral and poster presentations. Below is a summary of the orientation week and achievements of past students.

Orientation week

  • Introduction to medical research (4 hrs) - managing laboratory notebooks, laboratory etiquette, research ethics, research models
  • Suture class (4 hrs) - basic knot tying skills
  • Microsurgery (8 hrs) - basic use of a surgical microscope, basic tissue manipulation and microsuturing with microforceps, harvest 3 day chick embryos using surgical microscope
  • Basic molecular techniques (8 hrs) - DNA amplification, isolation and identification, using bacteria, plasmids and PCR
  • Digital Imaging (4 hrs) - basic digital image capturing, image manipulation and figure generation.
  • Computer skills (4 hrs) - data management, data presentation, PowerPoint presentations
