A Research Center of Excellence on Health Disparities and
Minority Health
Welcome to the Center for Health Disparities and Molecular Medicine (CHDMM). Each year medical and scientific advances offer new opportunities for the improvement of health. Yet a disproportionate burden of diseases such as diabetes, stroke, cancers, mental illness and obesity continues among African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Our faculty is engaged in innovative research to identify the causes of these health disparities and identify novel interventions to reduce their impact in our society.
The CHDMM was established in 2005 with the support of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, part of the National Institutes of Health. The center supports research projects and student training programs, and engages our community in addressing health and educational inequalities.
The mission of the CHDMM is to eliminate health disparities through research, education, and community engagement. The research theme of the CHDMM focuses on studying the role of the Augmented State of Cellular Oxidative Stress (ASCOS) and inflammation as potential factors that increase susceptibility to health disparities diseases in diverse population groups. The CHDMM integrates a diverse team of research scientists engaged in training a diverse and new generation of health disparities scholars.
