Legacy and Mission

Since 1909, our School of Medicine has educated medical students in a supportive Christian environment of excellence and caring. Our educational process has followed the best practices of medical education throughout its history while holding true to our original mission, to “continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ to make man whole.”

Learning Environment

Our instructional methods are an effective blend of lectures, small group sessions and problem-based learning. Our students are educated in state-of-the-art educational facilities including our anatomy laboratory. Our medical simulation center, which includes a virtual trainer room that utilizes virtual reality (VR) technology, enables students to learn, practice, and be assessed on medical procedures in a safe, educationally progressive hospital-simulated environment. Our clinical skills education exam rooms are equipped with video recording for student feedback.

However, beyond our up-to-date pedagogy and instructional equipment, our professors are truly invested in the success of their students, both professionally and personally. Our curriculum and environment is distinctively Christian, emphasizing a holistic approach to patient care. Our mission permeates the educational process, with courses that approach medical ethics and decision making from a Christian perspective and clinicians who role model caring professionalism. Our students are actively involved in service. Whether through international medical mission trips or outreach to neighboring underserved communities, our students consistently demonstrate their care for the welfare of others.

Purpose

Our purpose is the formation of Christian physicians, providing whole-person care to individuals, families, and communities. Fulfilling this responsibility requires:

Education - Creating an environment in which medical students, graduate students, and residents will acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes appropriate to Christian health professionals and scholars.

Research - Cultivating an atmosphere of inquiry and discovering new routes to wholeness through basic and clinical research.

Service - Providing timely access to cost-effective, comprehensive, whole-person care for all patients, without regard for their circumstances or status.

Developing the Whole Person - The Christian view of wholeness holds that the needs of patients go beyond the healing of the body, and that the development of students involves more than the training of the mind. We are dedicated to promoting physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual growth in our faculty and our students and to transforming our daily activities into personal ministries.

Reaching the World - Providing whole-person care wherever the opportunity arises, participating with the world community in the provision of local medical education, providing international physicians and scientists the opportunities for professional interaction and enrichment, sharing the good news of a loving God as demonstrated by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ—these are the goals of the students, faculty, and graduates of Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
