Loma Linda University School of Medicine has appointed Sharon Lum, MD, FACS, as chair of Department of Surgery.
Lum has been a dedicated breast surgeon for 20 years and specializes in caring for patients with malignant and benign conditions of the breast. Her research interests include healthcare disparities and quality measures in breast cancer care, and she enjoys mentoring trainees in clinical and health systems research.
“Dr. Lum is a widely respected breast surgeon and is the first woman to head this department,” said Tamara Thomas, MD, dean of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. “Her extensive academic, research and clinical experience will serve the department well.”
Lum is a professor of surgery at Loma Linda University and has served as vice chair of academic affairs in the Department of Surgery and medical director of the Breast Health Center at Loma Linda University and director of breast surgery at Riverside University Health System.
A graduate of Harvard College and Washington University School of Medicine, she trained in general surgery at Oregon Health and Sciences University, where she completed an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Fellowship.
Lum serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Recorder-elect of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, Governor in the American College of Surgeons, and Vice Chair of the Quality Integration Committee of the Commission on Cancer. She is also a member of the Health Equity Advisory Group and the Legislative Committee of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
Lum will assume the role on March 15, 2021, replacing Carlos A. Garberoglio, MD, who served as chair of the Department of Surgery since 2009.
