Medical students holding Match Day signs
By Hillary Angel - March 21, 2025

For fourth-year medical students at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Match Day is a defining moment—a culmination of years of dedication, resilience, and studying.  At precisely 9 a.m., students simultaneously opened their envelopes, revealing where they would be continuing their journey in medicine. They knew they were about to unlock their biggest level yet: residency.

This year’s theme, Level Up, perfectly captured the energy and excitement of the day as students transitioned from medical students to physicians, ready to embark on the next phase of their training.

Match Day is an annual event held on the third Friday in March, coordinated by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This year, over 52,000 applicants worldwide discovered where and in what specialties they would train.

Kevin Codorniz, MD, associate dean of clinical education and a 2005 alumnus of the School of Medicine, addressed students and their families, highlighting that 59% of LLU medical students matched in California, with 37% staying at Loma Linda University Health.

Match Day 2025 Highlights and Photos:

  • 40% of students matched into primary care specialty.
  • Anesthesiology saw continued growth, with 19 students matching into the specialty.
  • Surgery and surgical subspecialties accounted for 15% of the class, including fields such as ophthalmology, ENT, plastic surgery, and urology.
  • Loma Linda University School of Medicine's regional campuses welcomed students, with eight matches at AdventHealth Orlando and six at Kettering Health.
  • Students also matched at programs nationwide, including Mayo Clinic Rochester, Stanford, Harvard, The Ohio State University, UCLA, University of Colorado, and more.

The program included remarks from deans and student leadership before an official countdown was held to find out where the medical students will be assigned for the next three to seven years, depending on their medical specialty.
