The beginnings of Loma Linda University School of Medicine date back to 1901, four years before the official founding of what began as the College of Evangelists. In 1901, Ellen White, one of the founders of Loma Linda University, described property she had seen in a vision on which the Seventh-day Adventist Church would build a medical institution.

Today, Loma Linda University School of Medicine serves as an integral part of the Loma Linda University Health  (LLUH) System. The Health System comprises six hospitals and over 1,200 faculty physicians. This integrated model provides access to the highest quality of health care service. The faculty physicians represent a broad spectrum of specialties from primary care to subspecialty care and are employed in Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group. The affiliated institutions of the health system serve as the tertiary medical facility for inland Southern California; it is the only Level I regional trauma center for Inyo, Mono, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.

Loma Linda University Health System provides education venues for more than 1,200 medical students, residents, and fellows.

The School of Medicine is also affiliated with other major teaching hospitals in our area, including Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, and Riverside County Regional Medical Center.
