The Basic Sciences Department has four Centers focused in specific research areas.  Researchers in the Lawrence D. Longo MD Center for Perinatal Biology focus on the causes and/or consequences of oxygen deprivation in the developing fetus and during the birth process, and researchers within the Center for Health Disparities and Molecular Medicine focuses on the biological contributors to health disparities. The Center for Genomics focuses in providing state-of-the-art genomic (e.g., next-generation sequencing), epigenomic, and bioinformatic tools to better understand the molecular mechanisms of human disease from a genome-wide and systems biology approach. The Neurosurgery Center for Research, Training, and Education focuses in conducting translational bioengineering and biochemical research.
