The Center, in addition to the equipment within individual laboratories, has the following core equipment available.  A dedicated scientific specialist is on site to assure efficient daily operations of the Core instruments, provide training, assist with experimental design and to facilitate analysis of the data collected.

Surgical Facility and Telemetry

Surgical Facility and Telemetry

Resources needed for acute and chronic sterile surgical preparations, including gas anesthesia vaporizers, multi-channel gas flowmeters, fixed volume/pressure respirators, and instruments for intermittent measurements of blood gases are available. Continuous intra-operative monitoring is accessible for blood pressure, end-tidal CO2, tissue O2 saturation, and heart rate. Our two multi-channel EMKA Easy-Tel digital receivers and implantable transmitters enable chronic measurements of blood pressure and EKG via telemetry. These resources are managed by the Center’s highly experienced certified veterinary technician.
Molecular Biology Core

Molecular Biology Core

To facilitate analysis of gels and membranes resolved via electrophoresis, our Molecular Biology Core includes a LiCor Odyssey CLx infrared gel imaging system, and an Alpha Innotech FluorChem system capable of both Fluorescent and Chemiluminescent imaging. The core also maintains multiple instruments for qPCR measurements including a BioRad CFx and a Roche Light Cycler.
Agilent Technologies Seahorse XFe24 Analyzer

Agilent Technologies Seahorse XFe24 Analyzer

The Seahorse XFe24 measures oxygen consumption rates and proton efflux rate produced by live cells in 24-well plates. Cells can be studied in whole intact tissues, freshly dispersed primary cultures, cultured cells after multiple passages, or isolated mitochondria. These measurements enable calculation of key characteristics of cellular metabolism and mitochondrial function including rates of mitochondrial respiration, glycolysis, and ATP production.
Miltenyi Biotec MACSQuant 10 Flow Cytometer

Miltenyi Biotec MACSQuant 10 Flow Cytometer

The MACSQuant flow cytometer employs three separate lasers to capture fluorophore emissions in 10 different windows at event rates up to 15,000 per second. It also accommodates sample volumes from 1-450 µl at flow rates of 25 to 100 µl/min from cells loaded in 96-well plates. Operation is fully automated, highly flexible, and can be used with a broad variety of commercial kits and reagents.
FUJIFILM VisualSonics Vevo 3100 Ultrasound Imaging System

FUJIFILM VisualSonics Vevo 3100 Ultrasound Imaging System

The Vevo imaging system captures imaging at up to 70 MHz with resolution down to 30 micrometers. The imaging software is capable of state-of-the-art image analysis in 2D, 3D, and 4D, including assessments of blood flow, cardiac function, embryonic development, and placental structure.
Bruker ELEXSYS E500 X-Band EPR Spectrometer System

Bruker ELEXSYS E500 X-Band EPR Spectrometer System

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is the gold standard for measurement of reactive oxygen species as it is more direct, specific, quantitative, and in many cases more sensitive than fluorescent methodologies. In addition to reactive oxygen species, the EPR system is capable of in situ measurement of various metalloproteins, nitric oxide metabolites, and other biomarkers.
Leica CM3050 Cryostat

Leica CM3050 Cryostat

The cryostat is available for preparation of frozen sections, and for preparation of paraffin sections. Resources needed for tissue fixation, paraffin embedding, and microtome sectioning for image acquisition and analysis in the Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Core is available.

The Basic Sciences Department, in addition to the equipment within individual laboratories, has the following specialized core facilities available to basic sciences researchers:

* Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Core

* Atomic Absorption

* Mass Spectrometry

* Magnetic Resonance Imaging
